Pat Cash
Renowned for his exceptional net play, Pat Cash first came to the tennis world’s attention when he became the world No.1 junior in 1981 before going on to capture both the Wimbledon and US Open junior titles the following year.
In 1983, Pat won his Davis Cup debut rubber in a World Group first round tie at Memorial Drive in Adelaide. He was a member of the victorious Australian teams in 1983 and 1986 over Sweden in front of a Kooyong home crowd.
Pat’s greatest achievement dates back to 1987 when he became the first Aussie since John Newcombe in 1971 to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon after defeating then world No.1 Ivan Lendl in straight sets.
Famous for his black-and-white signature headband, his celebrations upon winning the title are etched in Wimbledon folklore, Pat scaled the outer walls of Centre Court to his player’s box, starting a tradition that has been emulated by many champions since.
In Australia, Pat was a finalist at the Australian Open in 1987 and in 1988 he repeated the feat at the new Flinders Park venue after the Australian Open moved from its traditional home at Kooyong.
In 2003, Pat’s achievements were formally recognised with his induction into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2005.
Following his retirement Pat has coached several top players and continues to give back to the sport he loves through Youth of Tomorrow.
